The Warren Wellness Public Programs for fall & winter are underway:

Fall & Spring are natural times to rid your body of toxins.  Contact us today to join the growing group of clients that are committing themselves to an  Individual Fall Purification Program that will bring some welcome health and energy (among many, many other things) into your life.  Regenerate on a cellular level to modify your genetic expression and boost those mitochondria powerhouses. (Mitochondria are organelles within your cell that create energy.)  “My first Purification experience changed my relationship to food, my expectations of health, and was a positive, life-changing 21-day journey.  And the weight loss was welcome, as well!”  There are savings for groups of 2 or more that sign up together.  Sound good?…let’s get started!  Find more information by clicking here.

Your Wellness.  We are excited to announce that we will be offering a free webinar series, “Your Wellness”, on the second Thursday of each month from 7:30-8:00 pm Eastern Time (9/13, 10/11, 11/8, 12/13 for 2012).  We will send out an announcement, a few weeks prior, to remind you of the event, to announce the discussion topic, and to provide the sign-up link.  Our first webinar in this series will be held on Thursday, September 13, and the topic will be On the Run: Food Choices.  Please register by clicking on this link.  All sessions will be recorded, for those that can’t make that time, but you must sign up ahead of time to register and have access to the recording after the actual event.

Local?  Come to the Franklin YMCA from 6:30-8:00pm on Wednesday evening, September 18th, to discuss The No-Cancer Zone, presented in collaboration with the LIVESTRONG program.

And mark your calendars for Saturday, February 2nd!  We will be presenting a local full-day workshop, The Cancer-Free Zone, from 10am-4pm at Harmony Center in Medfield, MA.

More information, and ongoing updates, about our programs can be found on our webpage, in the “Education & Programs” section:http://www.warrenwellness.net/education__programs.  Please note, when reviewing that section, that we are also frequently delivering private programs to groups, companies, and institutions.  Contact us today to schedule your Warren Wellness Education Event.

The Warren Wellness Food of the Month is: Kale!

This nutritional superstar vegetable is actually a member of the cabbage family…which means it is a cruciferous vegetable…which means “cancer-fighting!”  And, Kale is one of the VERY TOP cancer-fighting foods, hence my use of the word “superstar.”  In addition to preventing cancer, this dark, leafy green provides protein & fiber and is loaded with calcium, iron and vitamins A, C, B6, and K. Wow, calcium and vitamin K in one package?…hello, healthy bones!  Kale also contains plenty of copper, manganese, beta-carotene and the vitamins B1, B2, and E.  At only 35 calories per cup (raw & chopped), it is a low-calorie, nutrient-dense, “smart-carb” way to nourish yourself.

There is plenty of this fabulous health-building food available right now at farmers markets, farms, and grocery stores.  Go organic, where possible.  How to prepare it?  First, you must always cut out the fibrous stems.  I have two favorite recipes, both very simple.  One is to simply steam it for 4 minutes and serve it with butter and sea salt.  The butter, in addition to being nutritional on its own, helps you absorb the copious fat soluble vitamins (A, K, E) in the kale.  The second recipe, for Kale Chips (YUM!), has just been posted on our Facebook page.

This month’s Tip for Health is: Eating Smart After Sunset.

A struggle that many of my clients have is giving in to late-night eating.  That’s right, you’re not alone!  My first advice is to eat dinner at a reasonable time before bed (2-4 hours) and then eat again when you get up in the morning.  However, since we don’t live in a perfect world, and you may not follow that advice 100% of the time, let’s examine some other tips that will help you make smart choices:

·         Eat small meals throughout the day, that are low in empty carbs.  This will keep your blood sugar steady and you are less likely to be digging into the Oreos or Doritos at night.

·         Often, you’re not really hungry, you just want something to “do” while you chat with friends & family, watch TV, or listen to music.  Try a beverage, like herbal tea, water with lemon and Stevia (“healthy lemonade”), or some home-made chicken broth.  Or, have some knitting, a crossword puzzle, or a Sudoku challenge in your hands.

·         Do not bring containers of food to the couch as company for TV-watching! This is a recipe for disaster (pun intended).  Put your snack on a small plate and just bring that with you.  This inhibits “mindless eating” and helps you keep track of how much you’re ingesting.

·         What to put on that small plate?  For crunch, try the Kale Chip recipe mentioned above, or even air-popped popcorn with butter.  Nuts, carrots with hummus, or celery with a nut butter are also great, crunchy snack choices.

Remember, reaching your ideal weight and/or improving your health happens via baby steps…one smart choice at a time!

Food for Thought.  Each day is a gift.  There are no “good days” or “bad days” because every day that we are here is a good one.  Certainly, there are harder days and easier days, but they all contribute to who you become as you experience life.  Treasure every moment that you have.  And treasure it more because you shared it with someone special, special enough to spend your time with.  Remember that time waits for no one.

Yesterday is history.

Tomorrow is a mystery.

Today is a gift.  ….that’s why it’s called “the present!”

And, in closing, the Warren Wellness Quote of the Month is:

“The practitioner of the future will give no medicine, but will interest her clients in the care of the human frame, in diet, and in the cause & prevention of disease.” – Thomas Edison (slightly changed from his original quote)

The human body is, in its balanced state, an amazingly resilient, strong, and well-running “machine.”  It runs well if the basic laws of nature are followed.  When these laws, like “eat whole, nutrient-dense foods”, are not followed, optimal health starts to slip away.  Functional medicine dictates that we heal the body foundationally, as opposed to using pharmaceutical “silver-bullets” to quiet the symptoms.  Why would we want to quiet the body’s communication to us?!?  I don’t know either.  The human body is always doing the best it can, given the circumstances we give it.  Want to find that balance again?…we can help!

The food you eat builds your body, every day, for better or for worse.  Make choices for health!

Laurie
